More than 100 delegates signed up for the recent offshore wind seminar, which took place at the Cedar Court Hotel in Wakefield earlier in December. The event was organised by NAMTEC (the National Metals Technology Centre), in association with AEM (Advanced Engineering Materials) Yorkshire.

Despite the extreme winter conditions manufacturers from across the North and Midlands braved the snow and ice to find out how they could have the chance to supply this exciting new sector, which is estimated to be worth over £70bn.

NAMTEC’s Dr Alan McLelland explained: “The aim of this event was to ensure that UK manufacturers and suppliers have the information they need to compete for contracts within the lucrative offshore wind sector. The UK has pledged itself to the development of a low carbon economy which will lead to an investment of £70bn in offshore wind by 2020, so there are vast business opportunities open to companies with the right expertise.”

Keynote speakers included leading industry figures working in the renewable energy divisions of Siemens Transmission & Distribution, Able UK and David Brown Gear Systems, along with representatives of Yorkshire Forward and Mainstream Renewable Power. Attendees were also able to benefit from exhibition space that allowed exhibiting companies to interact with delegates before, after and during the event.

The seminar also provided a great chance for manufacturers to network with other suppliers in the offshore wind industry to look at the opportunities for collaboration and to share best practice.
