While stressing the urgent need to act and speed up grid development, Commissioner Oettinger also emphasised the key role of the markets in funding the large majority of the grid upgrades.
Stock markets need to be made aware of the potential for investment in infrastructure, he said, while adding that the EU would provide “limited and targeted support” for certain priority projects.
The Commissioner was speaking at an event organised by the European grid operators’ body, ENTSO-E, in Brussels on 10 February, entitled “Towards electricity infrastructure for a carbon-neutral market”.
