Two new non-Executive Directors have been appointed to the Board of SSE (Scottish and Southern Energy plc). Jeremy Beeton and Katie Bickerstaffe will join the Board on 1 July 2011.

Jeremy is Director General of the UK Government Olympic Executive, the body overseeing the London 2012 Olympic Games. He joined the Executive from the US construction company Bechtel, where he was a Principal Vice President.

Katie is Group Director Marketing, People & Property, and UK Online for Dixons Retail plc, where she is also a member of the Group Executive Committee. She joined Dixons Retail from Somerfield Ltd, where she was Group Retail Director and Group HR Director.

Their appointment will take to six the number of independent non-Executive Directors on the Board, in addition to the Chairman. A total of four Executive Directors also currently serve on the Board. This will become three when Colin Hood, Chief Operating Officer, steps down later this year, in line with the announcement made in December 2010.

Lord Smith of Kelvin, Chairman of SSE , said:

“An effective Board needs people with broad and diverse experience. With their backgrounds in construction and retailing, Jeremy and Katie will complement greatly the skills of the non-Executive and Executive Directors and help make sure SSE successfully tackles key issues such as large capital projects and changes in energy supply.”
