Tideland Lights and Fog Signals for Ormonde Wind Farm (UK)

Tideland Signal has supplied Burntisland Fabrications (BiFab) of Fife with the first aids to navigation to warn shipping in the vicinity of the new Ormonde windfarm currently under construction 10Km off Barrow-in-Furness in the Irish Sea.

The Tideland equipment is supplied in kit form ready to install on turbines in accordance with IALA 0-139, which calls for flashing yellow lights with a range of 5 NM on the significant peripheral structures (SPS) at intervals of not more than 3 NM around the perimeter of the field. Each Tideland kit consists of an MLED-155 MaxiHALO 60 main lantern , MLED-120E 1T secondary lantern, both with a range of 5NM, AB-560 fog signal and Sentry visibility detector, all complete with intermediate structures, AC power supply, battery back-up, monitor and control systems.

Tideland’s MLED-155and MLED-120 lanterns are designed for use with an external power source, in this case AC, and offer minimal maintenance requirements and a service life of seven years on station in the most demanding environments. Long-life LEDs and high-integrity electronics housed in a tough UV-resistant polycarbonate enclosure ensure that lantern will not need to be opened during its service life and, when buoy-mounted, will even withstand being submerged in salt water.

In the Ormonde application, the MLED-155 is fitted with a yellow MaxiHalo 60 multi-code LED flasher, sunswitch and on-board GPS to synchronize the flash code. The MLED-120 is also equipped with GPS and Tideland Signal’s SyncMaster circuitry which enables two or more MLED-120E lanterns to flash in unison without interconnecting cables or radio links between lanterns.

The Tideland AB-560 fog signals are also synchronized via GPS. They incorporate five drivers/emitters producing 133.2 dB at 1 metre equivalent and with a range of 2NM, broadcasting a 360º sound beam in the horizontal plane, with a pre-selected code. The drivers/emitters are housed in robust GRP casings and are mounted in a galvanized steel structure designed to withstand severe storms.

Ormonde is owned by the Swedish company Vattenfall, one of the largest European electricity generators and a leading player in the growing UK land and sea-based wind industry. The Repower turbines are mounted on innovative steel platforms and steel jackets produced by Burntisland Fabrications. The generators will be installed by ASEA, while Harland and Wolff are responsible for logistics and assembly services.

Approved to ISO 9001:2008, Tideland Signal Limited is a British-based member of the Tideland group of companies, which specializes in the design and manufacture of aids to marine navigation. The Tideland group is independently owned and has its headquarters in Houston, Texas.
