Today First Minister Alex Salmond announced that Nigg fabrication yard has been bought by Global Energy Group (GEG), creating 2,000 on-site jobs by 2015.
A public fund of £1.8 million was also announced to help support the transformation of the site into a renewables hub.
Johanna Yates, Offshore Policy Manager for Scottish Renewables , said:
“Scottish Renewables is delighted to learn that the Nigg fabrication yard has been given a new lease of life which will see 2,000 new jobs created, many of which will support engineering activity in the offshore wind industry.
“The Nigg yard is based at a strategic port for Scotland’s wave, tidal and offshore wind industry because of its access to the Pentland Firth and east coast offshore wind sites. It has a successful track record manufacturing vital components for the industry including, amongst others, the turbine foundation for Atlantis’ AK1000, the world’s largest tidal turbine, which is now generating electricity at the European Marine Energy Center (EMEC) test site in Orkney.
“This announcement re-affirms the commitment from private investors and the Scottish Government, and importantly signals the continuing momentum felt by the renewables industry in Scotland.”
