On 1 November, Lower Saxony’s Minister of Economic Affairs, Labor and Transportation, Jörg Bode, visited the Orange Blue Terminal in Eemshaven, in which the Buss Group has a majority interest, as part of a two-day official visit.
Accompanied by some 25 representatives of business and industry, the minister acquainted himself with developments at the location and further opportunities for economic cooperation with the state of Lower Saxony. In particular, the talks focused on future developments in the field of offshore wind energy.
“Eemshaven is an outstanding example of transnational cooperation in Europe’s shift towards alternative energy sources,” Minister Jörg Bode said. “Here one can see where the further development of the Rysumer Nacken in Emden could lead.”
Orange Blue Terminals B.V. operates a terminal in Eemshaven with a 260 meter-long quay, which is due to be extended to a total length of 630 meters in 2012. The terminal’s equipment and geographical location and a draft of up to 14 meters make it suitable for the transshipment of goods of all types, especially for the offshore wind energy sector. Its facilities include an LHM 600 mobile harbor crane with a maximum lifting capacity of 208 tons, which is specifically designed for the transshipment of heavy-lift and project cargos and is also suitable for container, general and bulk freight.
“Due to its geographical location in the proximity of more than 20 offshore wind parks in the North Sea and its infrastructure, Eemshaven has the potential to become a base port for offshore wind energy projects. This means this up-and-coming location offers both German and Dutch companies a good and necessary compliment to northern German ports,” said Bert Hoekstra, managing director of Orange Blue Terminals B.V.
The German delegation led by Herr Bode was received in Eemshaven by Heinrich Ahlers, CEO of the Buss Group, Bert Hoekstra, managing director of Orange Blue Terminals B.V., and local politicians, including Marijke van Beek, the mayor of the municipality of Eemsmond, to which Eemshaven also belongs.
The participants discussed with the German delegation possible ways to expand and encourage cooperation between northern Germany and the northern Netherlands as a whole. The official visit to the northern Netherlands was organized by the North German Institute of Trade and Industry and took place at the invitation of the Queen’s commissioners in the provinces of Groningen and Drenthe.
