Energias de Portugal Renováveis SA has become the first World Ocean Council (WOC) member from the offshore renewable energy sector, and the first member from Portugal.

Energias de Portugal Renováveis SA (EDPR) is a world leader in renewable energy. The company is present in the US, Canada, Brazil, UK, Spain, France, Italy, Belgium, Romania and Poland – in addition to Portugal. EDPR has over 7,000 MW of installed renewable wind energy capacity, and almost 30,000 MW of development in the pipeline or prospective.

Mrs Ana Maria Fernandes, EDPR CEO stated, “The use of ocean space is critical to renewable energy contributing to the world’s growing energy needs. EDP Renováveis is pleased to become a member of the World Ocean Council. This enables us to better work with the sustainability leaders in other sectors in ensuring the future of responsible ocean economic development, including for offshore renewable energy, in balance with environmental and social priorities.”

Mrs Ana Maria Fernandes added that, “We encourage other leadership companies in the renewables sector, and other members of the ocean business community in Portugal, to join us in working together through this unique ocean industry leadership alliance that the WOC has created.”

WOC Executive Director, Paul Holthus , responded, “We are honored to have EDP Renováveis join the WOC. Our diverse and growing industry leadership alliance welcomes the opportunity to work closely with EDPR and to engage offshore wind energy in the growing portfolio of WOC program activities that harness the power of the private sector in supporting responsible use of ocean space and resources.”
