Eneco have submitted an application for a marine licence for a meteorological mast to be erected close to the Development Area for the proposed Navitus Bay Wind Park.
The meteorological mast will collect reliable and representative wind and other metrological data which will be used to inform the design of the wind farm and provide estimates of energy production.
Eneco plan to submit a Development Consent Order (the wind farm’s planning application) to the Infrastructure Planning Commission (IPC) at the end of 2013.
Eneco applied to the Marine Management Organisation (MMO) for the meteorological mast which will be a temporary structure approximately 100 metres in height and located approximately eight miles from the Swanage and Bournemouth coastline.
Chris Sherrington, Project Director for Navitus Bay, says “A meteorological mast is a standard piece of equipment for onshore and offshore wind farms that provides important data to support any application. If a marine licence is granted then we will seek to minimise any impacts that the mast could have on the local area.”
“Along with the MMO, we have also informed some local authorities about the application and are currently undertaking ongoing consultation with Trinity House and Marine Coastguard Agency (MCA) on the Navigational Safety Risk Assessment. If the public have any questions about the met mast application then we’re more than happy to answer them at the upcoming public exhibitions across the south coast.”
The marine licence application for the Navitus Bay meteorological mast is now in a determination period lasting six weeks. If granted, construction is set to begin in July 2012, taking around one month to complete. The structure will then be taken down once all the relevant data has been gathered.
