Gujarat state government has revealed its intention to explore, in the upcoming years, the state’s tidal power generation potential, along with solar energy and wind power, in order to pursue huge power generation capacity.

This project has already been granted Rs 25 crore. Gujarat Energy Development Agency (GEDA) and the state-run Gujarat Power Corporation Ltd (GPCL) will be conducting the required surveys and studies to determine potential sites where tidal power generation plants could be established. Energy generation policy will be prepared according to a submitted report.

A MOU (memorandum of understanding) has already been signed between the state government and a UK-based Atlantis Resources Corporation and the ground work is expected to commence this year. The potential of the plant is estimated at 250 MW and it will cost approximately $150 million.

A study made by Atlantis shows the country has enormous potential to reach considerable levels of productivity in terms of tidal power.
