StormGeo to Assess Offshore Wind Potential in Norwegian Waters

StormGeo will investigate the potential and consequences for developing Offshore Wind Power in Norwegian waters.

In late spring/early summer 2012 the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate, NVE, on behalf of the Oil and Energy Ministry, will present the results of a major study examining the potential and consequences for developing Offshore Wind Power in Norwegian waters. As part of this study, StormGeo will lead the work focusing on Power Production and Wind conditions.

Power Production

StormGeo will estimate the expected potential production for each of the 15 areas in the study. Wind and wave conditions, including extremes, will be investigated as part of this. The study shall be representative with regards to geography and technology. Losses will be taken into account – such as wakes and icing conditions. Extremes will also be part of the study.

An extensive amount of data will be used and produced including all historical data available.

StormGeo North European Hindcast

The study includes new data from StormGeo, the NEHI (North European hindcast, previously described in our last Newsletter, archive and high resolution meso-scale modeling at 1km resolution near shore. Small (up to 200 MW) and large (up to 1000 MW) wind farms layout examples are prepared. Presentation of the data allows comparison of the different areas and turbine types.
