The Cabinet Secretary for Finance, Employment and Sustainable Growth, John Swinney, today announced the re-appointment of Crawford Gillies as Chair of Scottish Enterprise.

Scottish Enterprise is the Scottish Government’s main agency for economic development in North East, Central and Lowland Scotland. The Scottish Government provides Scottish Enterprise and Highlands and Islands Enterprise with a clear strategic direction through the Government Economic Strategy.

Crawford Gillies was appointed Chair of Scottish Enterprise in February 2009. During his first term as Chair, his style of collaborative leadership has made a strong impact internally and externally. The reputation of Scottish Enterprise has been enhanced and effective joint working developed with partners in both the public and private sectors.

Mr Gillies is currently a Non Executive Director of Standard Life plc and Chairman of Control Risks Group Holdings Ltd. He was an independent member of the DTI’s Management Board and Strategy Board from 2002 to 2007.

After graduating with an LL.B. from Edinburgh and an MBA at Harvard Business School, Crawford Gillies joined Bain, the international management consultants and became a partner in 1988. He has worked with clients throughout Europe in a wide variety of sectors on issues of strategy, organisation and performance improvement. From 1996 to 2001 he was responsible for Bain & Company’s business in the UK and assumed leadership of the firm’s European business from 2001 until he stepped down at the end of 2005.

This re-appointment will be for three years and will run from July 1, 2012 to June 30, 2015. It attracts a remuneration of 38,721 pounds per annum for a time commitment of 1.5 days per week.

Crawford Gillies does not hold any other public appointments.

Mr Gillies said:

“I am very pleased to continue in this challenging and rewarding role.

“Scottish Enterprise’s recent business plan set out a number of ambitious targets and how we will respond to the current economic conditions both in the short term and the long term. We recognise that the next few years are critical to Scotland’s economic future and I, alongside the Scottish Enterprise Board and every member of staff, am committed to doing everything that we can to help make Scotland more globally competitive.

“Partnership working remains a crucial part of the successful delivery of these goals and I look forward to playing a key role in the ‘Team Scotland’ approach which is helping Scotland to attract new opportunities, jobs and investment to transform the Scottish economy.”
