TAG Energy Solutions has recruited its first apprentices since the completion of its multi-million pound offshore wind turbine monopile production facility.
Carl Armstrong, 21, from Stockton-on-Tees, has joined the workforce as an Apprentice Welder and will work alongside TAG Energy Solutions 75 strong workforce of experienced engineers and welding professionals. He is working towards an Advanced Apprenticeship in Welding, assessed by Stockton-based Neta Training.
It is believed that Carl is the first apprentice to be employed at the Haverton Hill yard since Swann Hunter built its last ships at the facility in the late 70s. He will be involved in the production of large diameter steel tubulars, which are used to secure offshore wind turbines and other offshore platforms to the sea bed.
The 6,920m2 production facility, which is located on the River Tees, has the capability to deliver up to 100,000 te of steel monopiles per annum. It utilises an innovative, semi-automated manufacturing process, which rolls and welds the large steel structures.
Carl is working as part of a team currently producing a set of 100 metre long monopiles, which will be used to support a jacket construction in the North Sea operated by Total in the Elgin B oil & gas field. He will also support the delivery of future foundation production for the offshore wind market.
TAG Energy has completely regenerated the Haverton Hill yard in the past six years to enable it to serve the emerging offshore renewables market as well as existing energy sectors. Originally one of the River Tees’ main ship building sites, the historic yard has now seen 100 years of marine construction.
