The ‘Offshore Wind Projects in Mid-Atlantic Region’ seminar is scheduled for Thursday, May 24 in Washington. Markian Melnyk (Atlantic Wind Connection) will detail the project of wind farms from northern New Jersey to southern Virginia to be built in phases over a 10-year period. Keith Harrington (Chesapeake Climate Action Network) will focus on the proposed wind farm in Maryland.
In an era of high fossil fuel prices, oil imports from unstable countries, and the growing dangers of global warming, proponents of offshore wind claim that it can provide clean energy, create local jobs, establish long-term electric price stability, and for Maryland, produce the equivalent of two thirds of the state’s current electricity needs.
The Chesapeake Climate Action Network (CCAN) seeks to educate citizens and lawmakers across the state about Maryland’s need to develop offshore wind energy as a key component of clean energy technology.
The Atlantic Wind Connection is an undersea transmission cable that will bring power from the Atlantic’s wind farms to shore. The private-sector project will span approximately 350 miles from northern New Jersey to southern Virginia and be built in phases over a 10-year period.
