The UK Government needs to clear a number of high hurdles if it wants the offshore wind to significantly supply power to the homes in Scotland and the UK in the future, the Scotsman cited Chairman of Campbell Dallas LLP Ian Williams as saying.
First of all, the technology which is required to place offshore turbines in the sea has moved the renewables debate into unproven and risky territory, while “the siting, installation and servicing of turbines in deeper water creates many expensive technical challenges and risks not dissimilar to those involved with deepwater oil and gas drilling” , he added.
Furthermore, the banks have not shown enthusiasm about funding offshore wind projects, though the UK Green Investment Bank should help solve the large funding gap issue.
According to Mr. Williams, the UK should be supporting both the gas exploitation and renewables, taking into consideration that Scotland has strongly decided to reach the 100% renewable energy target by 2020.
Therefore, besides clearing the uncertainties, the UK Government should also set clear policies on the price support mechanisms and regulation of energy pricing, so the offshore wind industry can make certain long-term investment plans.
