RenewableUK, the trade and professional body for the wind and marine energy industries, announced the appointment of Maf Smith to the newly-created position of Deputy Chief Executive.

Mr Smith is an experienced senior manager with a strong track record in leading organisations in the renewable energy sector. After spending five years at Scottish Renewables, where he was Chief Executive, he moved to the Sustainable Development Commission in 2006, serving as Director for Scotland for five years.

Since 2011, Mr Smith has been working as a Senior Consultant with Xero Energy – a specialist energy consultancy – advising renewable developers and public bodies on regulatory and policy issues. During this period he was seconded by the Department of Energy and Climate Change to serve as an adviser on Electricity Market Reform.

Mr Smith commented:

“This is a role I’m looking forwards to enormously. There are challenges ahead for the wind and marine sectors, but already success aplenty. Our industry is expanding extraordinarily rapidly, creating thousands of jobs and attracting billions of pounds worth of investment. There’s a great sense of forward momentum and I’m looking forward to being right at the heart of it – helping to build up our industry so that the UK has the secure, competitive, low carbon renewable electricity it needs”.

“As the leading trade association in its field, RenewableUK plays a key role representing the sector to politicians, the media and the public. I’m determined to channel the enormous expertise and enthusiasm of the staff and members, to achieve even greater successes for the wind, wave and tidal energy industries in the years ahead.”

Mr Smith begins his new role on 16th July.
