Energinet.dk and the German company TSO TenneT are increasing the transmission capacity on electricity connections between Jutland and Northern Germany.

Following a number of conversions of the 400 kV and 220 kV connections across the Danish-German border, the market has now been informed that as from 1 September 2012, opportunities to import electricity from south of the border will increase as the maximum import capacity is to be raised from the current level of 950 MW to 1,500 MW. The maximum export capacity is also to be raised from the existing level of 1,500 MW to 1,780 MW as of 1 October 2012.

“The increase of capacity on the transnational connections is a fundamental precondition for assuring the security of supply in the Danish electricity system, where 50% of electricity consumption in 2020 will be based on wind power. Extensive exchange capacity is also crucial to competition on the international electricity market and thus constitutes a benefit for both consumers and Danish energy production as a whole,” explains Jens Møller Birkebæk , Director of System Operation at Energinet.dk .
