A France-based company DCNS, which is presently constructing submarines for the Indian Navy, has plans to focus on the offshore renewables in India and use the opportunities of the country´s maritime resources.

DCNS aims at lowering the costs of energy produced from these sources. Specifically, the Gulf of Cambay and Gulf of Kutch in Gujarat seem to have an 8,000 MW of tidal potential, with the Sunderbans in West Bengal and a few other coastal areas which bring good opportunities as well.

The company, which is a global leader in naval defense and ship building, is also skilled in building tidal, wave, ocean thermal, wind and floating wind turbines. It has reached the prototype level in turbines, with a ready ocean thermal energy turbine. This device can generate 2 MW of power, making a 100 MW project when connected to others, the Hindu Business Line reports.

Moreover, DCNS has a floating wind turbine (Winflo) ready and set to be tested in France by the end of the year. Winflo can be installed in 50-100 metres depth.
