Jeju has made the first step in achieving its “Carbon Free Island Jeju by 2030” plan by launching Jeju Energy Corporation (JEC) earlier this month at the Jeju Chamber of Commerce and Industry, reports the Jeju Weekly.

The main purpose of the JEC is to increase the island’s use of renewable energy sources from 7% to 100%.

The company is planning to install 2GW of offshore wind turbines, which will be able to supply all of the island’s energy needs.

The first phase of this project would be to construct two wind farms offshore Hallim and Daejeong, with the combined capacity of 350MW by 2016.

Beside this, JEC’s goals are: to manage previously constructed wind farms, create wind turbine test bed in Jeju and host an international energy forum.
