Mercon and Liandon announce that Imtech has joined their MLK Projects consortium. MLK Projects was founded by Liandon and Mercon earlier this year to market a new innovation in offshore substations named COSS for Compact Offshore Substation. As associated engineering company, KCI was heavily involved in the design.

Victor Krijt, Business Development Manager at Liandon explains: ‘’Imtech makes our MLK Projects consortium complete. As a specialist in electrical installations and offshore maintenance, Imtech will be responsible for the secondary electrical systems and maintenance of Compact Offshore Substations. Next to this they will also be involved in the High Voltage systems. As MLK Projects we can now offer the complete scope of design, supply, construct, operate and maintain our Compact Offshore Substations.’’

COSS was designed as a substation 2.0; a next step in offshore substation technology. The design goals are to lower CAPEX and OPEX and to enhance safety and availability. The core design element is to replace the traditional heavy oil based transformers of an offshore substation including their space and weight consuming auxiliary systems such as oil store/dumping tanks by Gas Insulated Transformers (GIT).

The COSS concept delivers an optimal weight/power ratio compared to the conventional offshore substations. Due to the lack of oil, the risk for fire or explosions has been reduced to virtually zero. Furthermore, the weight reduction leads to more installation flexibility due to the amount and availability of appropriate installation vessels.
