GL Renewables Certification (GL RC), a standard setting certification body for renewables, has opened its fifth international office in Glasgow. The office and staff members will deal with Type and Component Certification for clients in the United Kingdom and Ireland. In addition to onshore wind, GL RC Glasgow will concentrate on offshore Project Certification and Marine Renewables.

GL RC provides the renewable energy sector with technical reference documents, standards, requirements and guidelines which assist manufacturers, developers, operators, banks and insurers to build, construct, operate, maintain and finance state-of-the-art wind farms.

Apart from Glasgow, GL RC is active in Germany, North America, India and China. The certification body employs 185 engineers. Managing Director of GL Renewables Certification, Andreas Schroeter explains the reasons for choosing Glasgow as the location of the UK office: “The Glasgow office opening comes at a time, when in particular Scotland is making significant steps to become a world leader in renewables. Scotland has unique opportunities in renewables, abundant natural resources and capabilities to generate clean energy. Scotland has already attracted large industry stakeholders with substantial research & development capacities as well as a number of major offshore manufacturing bases including blade and nacelles plants, port logistics and O&M services. Hence Glasgow is the ideal location for GL RC to service the wind and marine renewable energy certification business”.

Andrew Garrad, Non-Executive Chairman of GL Renewables added: “I am very pleased that GL RC will support both the Scottish initiatives and also the UK push to realise the huge potential for renewables. The GL Group has been in Glasgow for 25 years and has always found it to be a perfect centre for renewable energy activity, with plenty of clients, plenty of activity and plenty of support.”
