Wave energy developer, Carnegie Wave Energy Limited, welcomed the leadership of the United States Defence Force and Australian Defence Force to Carnegie’s Wave Energy Research Facility for a briefing on Carnegie’s flagship Perth Wave Energy Project.

Carnegie’s Perth Wave Energy Project is located at Garden Island in Western Australia, home to HMAS Stirling, Australia’s largest naval base. The Australian Department of Defence recently signed a Power Supply Agreement with Carnegie to purchase all the power produced from the Perth Project and a grid connection agreement governing the connection of the wave project into the local HMAS Stirling electrical infrastructure.

Attendees at Carnegie’s Research Facility in Fremantle, Western Australia today included:

Carnegie also presented the results of a scoping study highlighting the applicability of CETO for both power and freshwater supply to a number of defence installations globally.

Carnegie’s Chairman, Mr. Grant Mooney said “We were delighted to be able to receive the heads of United States and Australian Defence Forces to our Fremantle Research Facility. Defence organisations globally have unique requirements for energy and water security, and are often co-located with attractive wave resources.”

The Perth Wave Energy Project will be 1-2MW in capacity and is approximately 50% Government funded through a combination of grants from the Australian Government as part of the Australian Renewable Energy Agency Emerging Renewables Programme (ERP) and the Government of Western Australia’s LEED Program. Detailed design is on track to be completed by the end of 2012 along with the securing of all Government approvals required for the construction and operation of the Project. The Project will deliver Carnegie its first power sales revenues through the sale of the electricity to the Australian Department of Defence.
