A wind turbine was erected off the coast of Choshi, Chiba Prefecture in Japan, in order to test the behaviour of offshore wind technology in rough conditions there.

This area is known for its frequent typhoons and the fact that two tidal currents also meet there. The demonstration project will help figure out what system is the most convenient to generate offshore wind power, The Denki Shimbun writes.

The system which is being tested is developed by New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) and Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO). It has an output of 2,400 kW and is now under adjustment to start operating in January.
