Danish political parties behind the Energy Agreement, reached in March, have selected six areas for development of offshore wind farms to set 500MW of coastal wind power. This will get the country closer to the target set by the Agreement, which says that 50% of electricity consumption should be supplied by wind power by 2020.
The six areas are Bornholm, Smålandsfarvandet, Sejero Bay, Sæby, and the southern and northern areas of the Danish North Sea, the Danish Energy Agency said in a press release.
On 22 March 2012, the Danish government established an ambitious and politically broad energy agreement with Denmark’s Liberal Party, the Danish Red-Green Alliance, the Danish People’s Party and the Conservative Party.
The government now agreed with these parties to issue a tender for 450MW of commercial wind farms in the designated areas, while 50MWwill be used for testing wind turbines.
Offshore wind farms of up to 200MW shall initially be placed at least four kilometres from the coast. Offshore wind turbines should be operational by 2020, with enough overall production to supply half a million households.
