TAGU Energy Lanka, a Sri Lankan company, is promoting offshore wind projects in the country, along with the UK’s Zero Carbon Marine Ltd (ZCM). They are seeking to build a large scale wind farm off the coast between Hambantota and Puttalam.

A team that will conduct a prefeasibility study is already engaged and they will examine the capacity and viability of wind in collaboration with the Meteorological Department.

“If we did not have a gut feeling that there was good wind power here in Sri Lanka, we would not have been here,” Peter Crone, the owner of ZCM , is quoted by The Island news site as saying.

This large scale project would comprise between 40 and 60 wind turbines and would be a total private sector investment, which will fund the equity without bringing in banks for the funding, ZCM Director Michael Huntingford told The Island.

The promoters expect to have the offshore wind project going in five years, after placing the equipment.
