After consulting Vincent Manfredi of the Division of Marine Fisheries, anti-fish barriers were installed two weeks ago in New Bedford Harbor, said Assistant Harbormaster Victor Fonseca for South Coast Today news site.

“This is the first physical step towards that offshore wind energy future for Massachusetts,” said Catherine Williams, a spokeswoman for the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center , which is in charge of the project. “It’s a great sign of things to come.”

Anti-fish barriers are installed to stop winter flounder, also known as lemon sole, from spawning in shallow, sheltered areas in estuaries.

The barriers will be kept in place for at least a year, and will cost about USD 200,000.
