In spite of the Australian Government’s plan to extend the Dampier to Bunbury pipeline to Albany, through Donnybrook, Bridgetown, Manjimup and Mount Barker and to build gas-fired power station in Albany, WA Greens think that the right answer to meet energy needs is in the wave energy, reports ABC News.
The Greens’ candidate for Albany, Dianne Evers, thinks that the pipeline extension is unnecessary since the wave energy potential in that area exceeds Albany’s demand.
“ The results came back when they did the testing down there that it was one of the best places in the world with the strength of the waves and the continuity.
“ It’s continuous, always there, always happening and it would be a fabulous place to demonstrate what can be done with wave energy .”
On the other hand, Liberals’ Albany candidate, Trevor Cosh says that the gas pipeline is needed to drive the region’s economy as it will secure a consistent power supply for Albany and the Great Southern.
He said: “ I’m about real infrastructure, not pie in the sky plans.
“ It’s for the region as well as Albany and I think it’s vitally important for our infrastructure investment and local jobs in the region. ”
