Japanese Environment Minister Nobuteru Ishihara plans to promote wind power in Japan through offshore wind turbines, reports Kyodo News Service.

The main reason for the poor offshore wind development in the country is a relatively short stretch of shallow waters, which are suited for the deployment of offshore wind turbines installed into the seabed.

Floating wind turbines are better suited for Japan’s conditions, but they are still undergoing a test phase.

Ishihara said: “I would like to have wind power generation capacity rise to over 1 million kilowatts in 2020.”

This would be 40 times more than the currently installed wind power capacity in Japan.
