The GBP 650 million worth Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon project has gained support from the Swansea councilors, reports This is South Wales news portal.

Robert Francis Davies, chairman of Swansea’s development management and control committee, thinks that people would be ”blown away“ by this, what could be the first in the world, tidal lagoon.

When constructed the tidal lagoon would be capable of generating over 400,000 MWh/year, enough to supply over 100,000 homes, or Swansea’s domestic electricity use.

If this project gets the green light, it could start generating power in 2017.

To the raised question by the councilors about the turbines’ impact on the fish, head of planning at Tidal Lagoon Swansea Bay Alex Hebert said: “They will be smooth turbines moving at the pace of a child’s skipping rope, and 95 per cent of them will survive.”
