Denmark Achieves 1 GW Offshore Wind Milestone

Today, the 36 th wind turbine will be connected to the grid at the Anholt offshore wind farm, which will bring Denmark’s connected offshore wind capacity to 1 GW, the Danish Wind Industry Association announced in a press release.

This milestone cements Denmark’s central position in this field and leads the way towards 50% of wind power in the country’s energy mix in 2020.

With today’s connection of the 36 th offshore wind turbine with a capacity of 3.6 MW, Danish offshore wind farms cover the equivalent of approximately 1 million households.

Jan Hylleberg, CEO of Danish Wind Industry Association , welcomes the fact that Denmark has achieved this historic milestone:

“On behalf of the industry, I am extremely proud that we achieved this milestone, which helps to emphasize Denmark’s global leadership in wind energy. In 2012, we reached 4 GW of wind power in total and we got an average of 30 percent of our electricity from wind turbines. Today’s milestone of 1GW of offshore wind places us in second place globally but a clear first taking into account Denmark’s size.”

Anholt Offshore Wind Farm, which is scheduled for completion by the end of 2013, comprises 111 wind turbines with an overall capacity of 400 MW, which can supply 4% of Denmark’s electricity consumption (equivalent to approximately 400,000 households).
