Borehole Survey to Be Carried Out for Dogger Bank Teesside (UK)

An onshore geotechnical survey near the proposed landfall location for the Dogger Bank Teesside export cables, between Redcar and Marske-by-the-Sea, will be carried out next week (starting Tuesday, April 16).

Specialist contractor VolkerInfra will drill a number of boreholes in total as part of the work, up to two near the Network Rail railway line and three to the west of the A1085 coastal road. They will be on site for around two weeks.

The aim of the work is to understand the soil strata and geotechnical information of the sites to enable a detailed specification of how horizontal directional drilling could be carried out. Horizontal directional drilling is the preferred technique for the installation of the export cable at the proposed landfall and for crossing the railway line.

The information gained from the survey will help to determine the most appropriate drill profile and which equipment to employ, to ensure the cable is installed with minimal disruption and without any longer term impacts on the coastal area.

The results will be included in a design study which the selected installation contractor can use as a basis for construction after the relevant consents have been received.
