Ever since the Fukushima nuclear disaster in 2011, Japanese companies have been investing strenuous efforts to develop other forms of energy.

Driven by that very goal, a group of 11 companies, headed by Marubeni, is looking to deploy a floating wind turbine off the Fukushima coast.

Takahide Soeda, from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan said that the Hitachi designed 2MW wind turbine is expected to start spinning in October, reports Bloomberg.

“There are test turbines in Portugal and Norway, but there have been no commercial floating offshore turbines in the world,” Soeda continued.

“We are bringing together Japanese technology to make floating offshore wind viable.”

The project will be located around 20 kilometers from Fukushima’s coastline in water depths of around 120 meters.
