ABB, a global leader in power and automation technology, has won an order from the Norwegian Transmission System Operator (TSO), Statnett SF for the construction of two new 420 kilovolts (kV) transmission substations. This is part of an overall initiative to expand and strengthen the national grid. The order was received in the second quarter.

As a part of the “Eastern corridor” project, Statnett is planning a new 420 kV transmission line between Bamble and Rød, in southern Norway and the two substations, Bamble and Grenland, will be located along this line. The upgrade is intended to facilitate the development of renewable energy and power exchange with the continent and will also support industrial development in the region.

ABB’s turnkey project includes the design, supply, installation and commissioning of the substations. Circuit breakers and air-insulated switchgear as well as other high-voltage equipment will form part of the key product supplies. The project is scheduled for completion in the second half of 2014.

“This initiative is part of the effort by many mature economies to upgrade aging infrastructure, accommodate an increasing share of renewables and support power exchange between regions and countries” said Oleg Aleinikov, head of ABB’s Substations business , a part of the company’s Power Systems division. “These substations will help to boost power supplies and strengthen the transmission grid and we are pleased to partner Statnett once again in supporting this effort.”
