A British diver was killed while performing underwater work at the Riffgat offshore wind farm, located north of Borkum in the North Sea, between Friday 12 July and Saturday 13 July. The 26-year-old was buried in 20-meter water depth by a concrete mat, Die Welt reports.
The mats were spread to weigh down power cables on the seabed. The diver wanted to bring the concrete mat into position with one of his coworkers, and fell under the mat during that attempt.
Immediately initiated resuscitation attempts were unsuccessful. The diving support vessel with the corpse of the victim was brought to Emden. An emergency room physician , who was brought from a rescue boat to the scene, could only determine the death of the diver.
The accident and cause of death will be examined in the next few days.
Riffgat offshore wind farm is being developed by EWE in collaboration with Enova. It consists of 30 wind turbines with a capacity of 108 MW.
