Mike Smith, Grimsby’s first apprentice offshore wind farm engineer, who was recruited by RES Offshore, informed jobseekers and their advisers on the opportunities that the offshore wind industry can offer to young people, the Grimsby Telegraph writes.

Young Mr. Smith and JobCentre Plus collaborated with Grimsby Renewables Partnership to deliver this speech to those interested in finding their way into the renewable energy industry.

His talk about the training experience will be a good starting point to advisers, who will use this to help jobseekers get a better insight into opportunities, training and recruitment methods to access employment in this sector, said Lorraine Alexander, employer and partnerships manager at Grimsby’s JobCentre Plus.

“If they are looking to be an engineer most companies are looking for experience or a degree, but most of the young people I spoke to at the JobCentre are still at the right age to go for an apprenticeship if they want to be part of it,” the Grimsby Telegraph quoted Mr. Smith as saying.

Mike Smith completed a BTec in electrical installation. After applying for a data technician with RES Offshore in Grimsby and doing extremely well in the written tests, which he took as a part of the job interview, the company decided to create the first wind turbine apprenticeship position.
