The Albany Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s Russ Clark has welcomed recent announcement about the Western Australia’s first full-scale tidal energy project, writes ABC News.

Last week the Environment Minister, Albert Jacob, gave the green light to the Tidal Energy Australia’s (TEA) proposal to build a station at Doctor’s Creek, near Derby, with a capacity of 40MW, enough to power up to 15,000 homes.

Albany has been marked as Australia’s best location for a wave energy plant.

Even though the wave and tidal energy are different, Clark believes that this tidal initiative will boost wave energy development.

“I think everything is measured on a case-by-case status and as we know in time we have to find different forms of energy, both wind and wave are renewable energy and we’ve proven we’ve got the right location for both,” said Clark .

“As we move forward we’ve got to be looking at these opportunities to create energy and electricity and create things for a grid.”
