In the wake of the first auction for the two federal lease areas offshore Rhode Island and Massachusetts, Jonathan Peress, vice president and director of Clean Energy and Climate Change, Conservation Law Foundation emphasized his support.
Peress said for Business & Real Estate: “(Today’s) auction is the harbinger of an exciting new era in the development of renewable energy in the United States.”
He continued: “Offshore wind is New England’s most promising energy resource, and one we must pursue quickly and confidently to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and combat climate change. We are pleased to see multiple bidders vying for this historic opportunity to advance renewable energy in the region and kickstart the industry nationally. We look forward to working with the winning leaseholders to deploy new wind farms responsibly and to the many benefits this clean, renewable resource will convey to the people of New England.”
A total of nine companies will bid for these two areas. The areas cover 164,750 acres.
