Barrier Group has secured its first offshore wind project following investment in new specialist technology.

The Wallsend-based company recently expanded its Coatings Division, enabling it to deliver neoprene coatings and rubber clamps for offshore wind towers. The move has since led to a project for TAG Energy Solutions.

Barrier is now providing rubber linings for the clamps and guides being fitted to the transition pieces being constructed by TAG Energy Solutions, for E.ON’s Humber Gateway offshore wind farm.

TAG Energy Solutions is currently manufacturing monopiles and transition pieces for the wind farm, for which Barrier has applied its rubber coatings to 40 clamps and guides for the first 4 foundations.

The project forms the first reward of the group’s technological advances and commitment to diversify its services.

A six-figure investment earlier this year introduced a 14 metre x 3 metre vulcanising vessel to Barrier, enabling the process of applying rubber to external Risers and J-Tubes, which are fitted to collector platform jackets and larger deep water wind turbines.

Robert Bowles, Chairman of Barrier Group, said: “We are delighted to have secured this new project for our new division on such a high profile UK offshore wind development.

“The investment in new technology was central to our commitment to diversifying and enhancing transferable skills with a view to serving multiple areas of the energy industry.”

Alex Dawson, Chief Executive of TAG Energy Solutions , said: “Establishing a robust and innovative supply chain is a vital component in the pursuit of success within the energy sector. Our engagement with Barrier on this project demonstrates the quality of companies that exist in North East England that are able to provide new solutions that meet the challenges of the offshore wind industry.”
