A recent study has showed that deep offshore wind farms could be financially viable by 2020, reports the Times of Malta.
This university study indicates that current prices of 24 cents per unit of offshore wind power could be lowered to 17 cents per unit due to the accelerated developments in wind technology.
Comparing to prices of fossil-fuelled energy, which range from 16 to 19 cents, the current offshore wind prices are not sustainable.
The study was supervised by Tonio Sant and funded by the Malta Council of Science and Technology’s National Research and Innovation Programme launched in 2009.
Malta is obligated, as an EU member state, to produce 10 percent of electricity from renewable sources by 2020.
