3sun Group, a specialist provider of products and services to the energy industry, has been shortlisted in the Innovation category at the Energy Institute Awards 2013.

The Group received recognition in the Innovation category for its ground-breaking, electronic 3D visually-based, handheld inspection system for managing legislative compliance, safety critical plant and equipment on wind turbines.

The Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tagging device has enhanced safety by reducing offshore-man hours, risk and costs.

3sun Group managing director Graham Hacon said: “We are delighted to be shortlisted in the Innovation category at this year’s Energy Institute Awards. The Energy Institute is a highly respected industry body and having our device recognised on a national level is a hugely encouraging.

“Our electronic 3D visually based inspection system was developed in collaboration with Scottish & Southern Energy and aims to improve legislative compliance and safety standards on wind turbines.

“The RFID tagging and Handheld Software technology delivers a complete solution for the identification and inspection of offshore wind turbine components. It is proving very successful for our clients.

“Since its inception, the company has grown significantly, with a start-up turnover of £1.5m, in just five years we have reached almost £12m and now employ 240 people. In response to growing demand for our products and services across the UK and Europe, we have also increased manpower with the creation of 100 new jobs across Europe as well as opening offices in Denmark and we have plans to create a presence in Germany too.”

“The nomination is a great achievement for the Group, recognising the hard work and dedication of the whole team, our rapid expansion and our absolute commitment to developing safety standards in the renewables industry.”

The winners will be announced at a prestigious black tie awards ceremony on 14 November 2013 at Sheraton Park Lane Hotel, London where Ben Fogle is set to present the winners with their trophies. The ceremony will celebrate excellence and innovation in the energy industry, in categories including communication, community, environment, safety and individual achievement.

3sun Group has headquarters in Great Yarmouth, England, and also bases in Oban, Aberdeen and in Bergen, Norway to support on-going rapid growth. It is also currently looking at other UK and overseas locations including a new facility in Esbjerg, Denmark.

3sun Group employs 240 staff offshore and onshore and is currently working on several projects in the UK and Europe. The Group has extensive overseas experience having worked in Europe, Asia, Africa, USA and New Zealand.
