Beothuk Energy Inc. (“Beothuk”) headquartered in St. John’s, NL announced the awarding of a contract for Engineering Consulting Services to Maderra Engineering Inc. (“Maderra”) of St. John’s, NL.

The services will include work on elements of Beothuk’s offshore wind projects. Maderra will act as Beothuk’s lead engineering firm and will provide engineering services and support across multi disciplines. They will use in house resources as well as commission support services on Beothuk’s behalf from Centers of Excellence.

Kirby Mercer President and CEO of Beothuk stated, “The awarding of engineering consulting services is an important step in the evolution of our company’s projects. It is also affirmation that Newfoundland and Labrador companies have the experience and expertise to play a major role in the engineering and development of the emerging North American offshore wind industry.”

“Maderra is looking forward to working with Beothuk and is very excited to be participating in the first project of its type for Atlantic Canada,” said Darryl Hyde, Managing Director of Maderra.

On September 20, 2013, Beothuk announced its proposal for a 180 MW demonstration offshore wind park that will be located in the Gulf of St. Lawrence covering an area of 40 square kilometers. It will have thirty, six-megawatt turbines and the capital cost will be approximately $400,000,000 CDN. Generated electricity will be green and is projected to cost less than ten cents per kilowatt-hour.
