German island in the North Sea, Heligoland, is changing its focus from tourism to offshore wind, writes E Turbo News portal.
Namely, Heligoland’s main economic pillar used to be tourism, but due to the offshore wind development in the North Sea the local hotel rooms are being rented to technicians.
The offshore wind farms NordseeOst (295 MW) of RWE Innogy and MeerwindSüd | Ost (288 MW) of WindMW GmbH are currently being built about 30 km north of the island.
Besides using the island as a construction base, the wind farms will be operated and maintained over a period of 20 years from the new service stations being set up in the southern port of the island.
