Fraunhofer IWES and Institute for Marine Resources (imare) will jointly showcase the Lidar measuring buoy at their stand at EWEA Offshore event in Frankfurt, Germany.

The IWES will provide information on all aspects of the buoy, its measuring services and the latest scientific knowledge concerning the development of offshore wind energy. For the first time at the EWEA Offshore, imare will be introducing itself as service provider for accompanying ecological research.

The Fraunhofer IWES measuring buoy has already had its first deployment near the offshore wind farm alpha ventus. The buoy enables wind speed measurement at sea at heights of from 40 to 200 m and is equipped with a Lidar (Light Detection and Ranging) system, which uses laser beams to measure wind speed. At the same time, all the other wind energy relevant environmental parameters can be gathered. In comparison with permanently installed measuring masts.

The buoy can be installed at any given offshore site with no further installation costs and with far less extensive and complicated approval procedures. A correction algorithm, developed at the Fraunhofer IWES, calculates the buoy’s ego motion from the measurement values and ensures high wind measurement data quality from a moving platform.
