Teachers from 13 schools in the North East have been selected to take part in an innovative education programme where they will use interactive lessons and workshops to raise student awareness about career opportunities in offshore wind energy.

Forewind’s Champions for Wind schools programme enters its third year with the induction of this latest group of teachers from schools in Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, North Yorkshire, Redcar & Cleveland and County Durham

Known as “wind energy champions”, they will receive bursaries to develop and implement offshore wind energy careers-related activities for their students as part of the initiative being run by Hull- based Humberside Engineering Training Association (HETA).

Some schools have split the bursary, so a total of 16 teachers will be introduced to the industry with talks from experts and a conference this weekend (November 15 and 16) at the National Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Centre at the York University.

After this weekend’s introduction to the industry, they will work with the HETA coordinators, other teachers and careers advisors to design and develop curriculum-based resources that are relevant to their subject areas, students, schools and local community.

Teachers from the following secondary schools have been chosen to take part this year: Redcar Academy, Lawrence Jackson School, Eskdale School, Caedmon School, The Snaith School, Boulevard Academy, Malet Lambert School, and Cottingham and Hessle High Schools as well as teachers from the primary schools: Esh Winning, Glaisdale, Castleton and St Hedda’s.

With the introduction of the third cohort of teachers, a total of 32 champions from 29 schools and organisations, and more than 3000 students, will have taken part in some aspect of the programme and more aware of the wide range of job opportunities in the offshore wind energy industry.
