The main components for the LORC Nacelle Testing facility have started arriving at the site, following the completion of the foundation for the test facility, where LORC will test future offshore wind turbines with a power output of up to 10 MW.

The 80-tonne heavy rotor – which is the rotating part of the direct drive motor for the test facility – was unloaded in just a couple of hours over Christmas. The team took advantage of the unique infrastructure at Lindø Industrial Park, where LORC is establishing its nacelle test facility. The other main components of the motor, the stators, are in production and will arrive on site within the next few weeks, allowing the assembly of a large motor with a torque of 12 million Nm at 10 RPM.

This month, a team from General Electric, GE Power Conversion, will start the construction of the test facility with transformers, motors and converters, electrical control systems and systems required to manage inputs for the test facility, simulation of a wind farm, actual connection to the grid, etc.

LORC recently signed its first contract with Vestas for the testing of the V164-8MW turbine from mid-2014 when the construction will be completed.
