Wave energy company Seatricity has contracted A&P Falmouth to build Oceanus 2, a wave energy device, which will be deployed at the Wave Hub, a grid-connected offshore facility in South West England.
The device is scheduled for deployment in spring of 2014, and if successful, Wave Hub could see full scale grid-connected array in 2015.
The array would consist of 60 wave energy devices with a total capacity of 10MW.
Seatricity has already tested Oceanus 1 at the EMEC test site (Billia Croo).
”The technology is scalable so once we complete our testing at Wave Hub this year we hope to move quickly to a full array. We’re delighted to be working so closely with the local supply chain and look forward to A&P completing our first device in the coming weeks,” said Peter Mitchell, Managing Director of Seatricity.
To produce electricity, float travels up and down with the waves and operates a pump to pressurise sea water which is piped ashore. Once ashore the pressurised sea water is used to drive a standard hydroelectric turbine to produce electricity.
