Commenting on today’s news that Siemens and the ABP are to invest £310m in UK wind turbine factories, Head of GROW:OffshoreWind, Dominic Brown, said:

“The announcement from Siemens and UK Associated British Ports this morning is a fantastic boost for our offshore wind sector and further evidence that international companies are confident in our ability to deliver capacity and ‘green energy’.

“It sends out a global message that the UK is ready to lead the way in this field and will undoubtedly act as a catalyst for future investment opportunities…some of which are already at an advanced stage.

“There has been a long-term commitment to making this happen and the £310m investment will immediately create 1000 new jobs with the potential for hundreds more in the associated supply chains.

“This is where GROW:OffshoreWind can really make a difference. Our service has been shaped by industry leaders to deliver the technical expertise, market intelligence and access to technology centres that can help SMEs take advantage of this growing opportunity.

“We can also provide grants of up to £500,000 to firms looking for upfront investment to get ready for entry into the offshore wind sector.”

GROW:OffshoreWind is UK’s programme supported by the Government’s Regional Growth Fund and is committed to developing a vibrant SME offshore wind supply chain.

Over 200 companies have already benefited from the variety of grant support available spanning consultancy, investment in upfront fixed assets and tailored support for R&D projects.

The service recently held a joint event with DONG, Siemens and Statoil to brief attendees on the opportunities for Dudgeon, Hywind Scotland, Westernmost Rough, West of Duddon Sand and the Burbo and Walney extensions.
