A new paper, released by AIP Publishing, has been looking into the possibility of developing offshore wind power in the North Aegean Sea, Greece.

The study found that the Greek archipelago, and especially the island of Limnos, has the sufficient offshore wind potential at low depths and at relatively short distances from the shore.

Even though the visual intrusion of wind farms was the main drawback, researchers had a limitation for wind turbine deployment of maximum 11.1 kilometers from shore since Greece has not claimed an Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) yet.

For this model, 25 of Senvion’s 5MW turbines were used located 5.9 kilometers offshore.

In the conclusion, this study found that the development of offshore wind farms near the island of Limnos could be feasible and economically viable, having a cost of energy production equal to 87.92 €/MW h.
