The Sierra Club, along with more than 20 partners, has announced the Wind 100 – a 100 mile run across Long Island for offshore wind power on June 14th.

The event will highlight the historic opportunity for New York to build one of the nation’s first-ever offshore wind farms 30 miles off the coast of Montauk.

“New York could soon lead the nation in developing clean, safe and reliable offshore wind power off Long Island. Today we’re announcing the Wind 100 – a one-day, 100-mile run from Montauk to the Long Beach Boardwalk to show New York’s leaders that our families want clean, renewable offshore wind power for their homes and businesses,” said Lisa Dix, Senior New York Campaign Representative for the Sierra Club .

Matt Kearns , a Long Island-native, will make the 108-mile run from historic Montauk through South Shore towns hit hard by Superstorm Sandy concluding at a major finish line rally on the iconic Long Beach Boardwalk. The route connects two points with tremendous offshore wind potential, starting in Montauk where the Long Island Power Authority and PSEG-Long Island could decide this year to invest in wind power 30 miles offshore.

“Long Island families are all too familiar with the devastating impact of stronger storms, rising seas and dirty air, so now we want to be part of the solution. As a runner I wanted to do something that would connect coastal areas that could benefit from building job-creating offshore wind with areas hit hard by Superstorm Sandy. We’re showing that although Long Island families are at risk from worsening climate disruption, we also have the resources to help solve it by building renewable offshore wind power,” said Kearns .

More than 1,000 people are expected to meet Matt at the finish line on the Long Beach Boardwalk at a family-friendly rally that will include notable national speakers, local leaders and live bands. The public is encouraged to attend to cheer on Matt as he concludes this epic run.
