Vestas revealed it is planning to test what could be the world’s largest offshore wind turbine.

In papers submitted to the local government, the Danish wind turbine developer wrote it wants to test wind turbines of up to 10 MW in the waters west of Jutland. According to Reuters, Vestas said it has no immediate plans to develop the devices.

In April 2014, Vestas formed a joint venture with Japan’s Mitsubishi Heavy Industries with the main focus on offshore wind, and development of Vestas’ 164-8.0 MW turbine.

Jens Tommerup, CEO of MHI Vestas, did not want to comment on precise development plans, but told Reuters: “We are always looking to optimize our platforms.”

Recently, the joint venture secured a contract which would see four of its 8 MW turbines deployed at Velling Mærsk project in Western Denmark, thus allowing for phase two of turbine testing to commence.
