Environmental experts have raised concerns over the development of the £850m Swansea Tidal Lagoon, according to Building.

Natural Resources Wales (NRW) claims the project will affect the conservation area in the bay, as well that it has the potential to cause flooding.

“We do not share the same level of confidence as the applicant in the levels of significance and risks ascribed to a range of predicted environmental impacts,“ NRW said.

Financial concern was raised by neighbouring property owner St Modwen as he might be forced to sell his land as the development kicks off.

Tidal Lagoon Power reassured that they are working on an environmental plan, including flooding and marine mammal monitoring.

Alex Herbert, head of planning at Tidal Lagoon Power , said: “It is now the job of the Planning Inspectorate to determine if our application meets the criteria required for this game changing development to be given the go-ahead.“

The lagoon has a 240 MW nominal rated capacity, enough to provide power to over 120,000 homes for 120 years.
